Pearl jewelry is created by drilling holes in pearls and stringing them together to be worn around the neck; natural pearl necklaces are also believed to offer certain health and wellness benefits. Commercially available pearls fall into two categories: natural pearls and cultured pearls. The latter are formed over several years after irritants-such as small granules of abalone shell or grains of sand-are introduced into the shells of pearl-producing mollusks.

Pearls are a commonly used ingredient in Traditional Chinese Medicine, first documented in the Song Dynasty text *Kaibao Bencao*. They are formed by the accumulation of secretions produced by clams and snails in response to irritation. Medicinally, pearls are valued for their ability to calm the spirit and alleviate fright, clear heat and nourish *yin*, brighten the eyes and detoxify the body, and promote wound healing and tissue regeneration. Wearing a pearl necklace can be particularly beneficial for women, helping to regulate mood and soothe irritability associated with menstruation or menopause. Pearls also aid in preventing conditions such as chronic pharyngitis and thyroid disorders. Furthermore, they contribute to a smooth, refined complexion; gently massaging the skin with pearls in the morning and evening offers skincare and beauty benefits, including the reduction of blemishes and wrinkles.
